This months blog is without a doubt one of the most saddening yet inspiring ones I’ve ever written about so let me take you back to the start.
On Thursday 28th of July 2022, I was featured on the front page of the citizen with a small editorial about the charity paddle board I was doing to raise money for men’s mental health, on that same front page was the devastating news that Ed Slater had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND).
At the time I was delighted as I hoped the awareness of the charity paddle board would enable more money to be raised to support men's mental health, but it was obviously devastating news for Ed, his family and rugby fans across the country.
After buying the paper to read my article I then went on to read about Ed, now I don't know, neither have I met Ed, but as a father of two boys my heart went out to him and his family! Since then, I have followed his journey and during that time found out more about the disease and in many ways how much research is still needed.
Following Ed’s journey has been both heartbreaking and incredibly inspiring, there is no doubt that to play rugby at the level he did takes incredible mental and physical strength but the positivity he has shown after his diagnosis leaves me speechless!
I personally cannot imagine what he has had to deal with mentally, whilst at the same time staying strong for his family, for me it definitely puts a lot of things in perspective and emphasises the fact that you really do need to appreciate every day to the fullest.
Ed must also be a huge inspiration to all those who are also struggling with MND around the world, showing that despite the condition you can still have hope and positivity and face it head on.
